A Behind the Scenes Look at the Revisions to the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals

The revision of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) is now well underway, with an initial draft of revisions nearing completion. The Core Competencies Workgroup met on February 26, 2014 to discuss feedback received from the public health community and draft revisions to the Financial Planning and Management Skills Domain within the Core Competencies. The focus of the revisions to date has been on simplifying and clarifying language, reordering competencies to ensure a logical progression of skills, and addressing evolving workforce needs. Although changes are being made, many elements of the Core Competencies will remain the same. For example, the eight domain structure will be maintained, and no competencies will be moved from one domain to another. Upcoming Academic Health Department Learning Community Activities

This year's Academic Health Department (AHD) Learning Community activities are currently being planned based on feedback provided through a recent needs assessment. The needs assessment identified activities and resources of value to Learning Community members and will be shared at two upcoming meetings: the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) meeting on Monday, April 28, 2014 from 1-3 pm EDT and the AHD Learning Community meeting on Monday, June 23, 2014 from 2-3 pm EDT. In addition, a summer meeting of the Learning Community has been scheduled for Wednesday, August 6, 2014 from 3-4 pm EDT and will focus on the development of an AHD Learning Community mentorship program. All meetings are open to anyone interested in learning more about AHDs, and additional details can be found on the meeting webpages. The Council on Linkages thanks everyone who responded to the needs assessment and encourages continued input. Ned Baker Lecture Features Council on Linkages Chair and Academic Health Departments

Mark your calendars for the 15th Annual Ned E. Baker Lecture in Public Health on Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 4-5:30 pm EDT featuring Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice Chair C. William Keck, MD, MPH. His lecture, Academic Health Departments: Strengthening the Quality and Performance of Public Health Practice, will highlight the nature, history, and evolution of academic health departments. Please visit the Ned Baker Lecture Series webpage for more information and to register for either the webcast or live event in Bowling Green, OH (live event seating is limited to 60 registrants).

Save the Date for the Next Council on Linkages Meeting

Join the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) on Monday, April 28, 2014 from 1-3 pm EDT for an update on progress related to the Academic Health Department Learning Community, the revision of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals, and other Council on Linkages initiatives. This meeting will be held by conference call and is open to all interested in learning more about the Council on Linkages and its activities. New CDC Representative Joins the Council on Linkages

The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) welcomes John D. Lisco, MPH, CHES to represent the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Mr. Lisco serves as the Deputy Director of the Division of Scientific Education and Professional Development within CDC's Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services. CDC is one of 20 national organizations participating on the Council on Linkages to help strengthen collaboration between the public health practice and academic communities and ensure a competent public health workforce. NACCHO Releases 2013 Profile Findings

Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice member, the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), is pleased to release findings from the 2013 National Profile of Local Health Departments via its new website, www.nacchoprofilestudy.org. The main report of findings features chapters on local health department partnerships, leadership, and workforce, among other topics, and can be accessed by clicking on "Reports & Publications." Additional online-only data analyses are also available. Please contact [email protected] with any comments or questions.
