Council on Linkages Releases Meeting Schedule for 2017
  
The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) has scheduled four meetings to be held throughout 2017. Dates and times of the meetings are as follows:
  • Tuesday, April 11th, from 1-3pm ET
  • Monday, July 17th, from 1-3pm ET
  • Monday, October 2nd, from 2-4pm ET
  • Tuesday, December 12th, from 1-3pm ET
These meetings will be held by conference call and will focus on activities related to the Academic Health Department Learning Community, the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals, and other initiatives of the Council on Linkages. All public health professionals interested in learning more about Council on Linkages initiatives are welcome to attend. New River Academic Health Department Featured at March AHD Learning Community Meeting
  
Join the Academic Health Department (AHD) Learning Community for its next virtual meeting on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, from 1-2pm EST for an inside look into the New River Academic Health Department. During this meeting, AHD Learning Community member Sophie Wenzel, MPH, Virginia Tech Department of Population Health, will discuss development of this AHD partnership, her shared AHD Coordinator position, workforce development activities and Council on Education for Public Health accreditation, funding, student involvement, and joint research projects, among other topics. An opportunity for questions and discussion will follow the presentation. This meeting is open to all who are interested, but registration is required. NACCHO Profile Study Reports Increase in Core Competencies Use
  
The Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies) continue to be used by health departments across the country in their workforce development efforts. According to the 2016 National Profile of Local Health Departments study conducted by the National Association of County and City Health Departments, a Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice member, overall use of the Core Competencies increased by 73% among local health departments since the study was last completed in 2013 - growing from approximately 26% of local health departments to 45%. In addition to an overall increase in usage, the report highlights an increase in use of the Core Competencies for assessing training needs, developing training plans, writing position descriptions, and conducting performance evaluations, with use for developing training plans and writing position descriptions doubling between 2013 and 2016. Contribute to Core Competencies Workgroup Activities at March Meeting
  
The Core Competencies Workgroup supports activities of the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice related to the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies). Interested in getting more involved in Core Competencies activities? The Workgroup will hold its first meeting of 2017 on Monday, March 13th from 3-4pm EDT to discuss the draft of a new prioritization tool, a set of population health competencies, potential new resources and tools to help public health professionals and organizations use the Core Competencies, and a project related to the Core Competencies-based Competencies for Performance Improvement Professionals in Public Health. To join the Core Competencies Workgroup and participate in the meeting to learn more about these efforts, please contact Janelle Nichols at [email protected]. 
 
  
 
SOPHE Names New Council on Linkages Representative
  
The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) welcomes Michael Fagen, PhD, MPH, to represent the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE). Dr. Fagen serves as an Associate Professor and Chief of the Public Health Practice Division in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Director of the MPH Program in the Institute for Public Health and Medicine at Northwestern University. SOPHE is one of 22 national organizations participating on the Council on Linkages to help strengthen collaboration between the public health practice and academic communities and ensure a competent public health workforce.
