To support the ongoing training of public health professionals, the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) has developed an online resource focused on enhancing public health training efforts. The Guide to Improving and Measuring the Impact of Training aims to help training institutions and programs, sponsors of training, trainers, and public health organizations interested in improving and measuring the impact of their training efforts navigate the training process.

This free resource includes strategies and methods for improving and evaluating training, as well as references to literature on training and the evaluation of training. Strategies and methods were developed by the Council on Linkages’ Training Impact Task Force, which brought together 11 professionals with expertise in training and evaluation. Within the guide, the training process is divided into five main stages or activities – assess, motivate, design, deliver, and evaluate – and materials are organized around these areas. Each of the sections builds on the previous sections, reflecting the process by which trainers move through the steps of developing, delivering, and evaluating training. Readers can move through the sections of the guide in this order or visit a particular section of interest directly.

The Guide to Improving and Measuring the Impact of Training was designed to grow as new resources are identified and added. Literature references have recently been updated, and the Council on Linkages is now seeking to add tools and examples to help implement the strategies and methods described in the guide. Submissions of tools, examples, and literature references to incorporate into the online guide are welcome and appreciated.
