Dear Subscriber,

PHF E-News brings you the latest information on how you can use performance management, quality improvement, and workforce development to improve the quality and performance of your organization and the health of your community.
Update on PHHS Block Grant Opportunities

As promised, the Public Health Foundation (PHF) has continued to monitor the Preventive Health and Health Services (PHHS) Block Grant opportunities for health departments to build and sustain performance management, quality improvement, and workforce development activities geared towards strengthening infrastructure and preparing for accreditation. Go to PHF's PHHS Block Grant webpage for updated information on how this program can positively impact your health department. This update includes:
  • Information about the July 1, 2014 due date for revised work plans and budgets to account for new, doubled FY 2014 PHHS funding
  • Specific guidance on strategy planning for state, tribal, local, and territorial health departments
  • Sample technical assistance and training packages that can be written into your plans
  • Information on how funds can be used beyond chronic disease programs to support agency-wide infrastructure and capacity building initiatives

Keep monitoring future issues of PHF E-News and the PHHS Block Grant webpage for updates as more information becomes available about opportunities through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to support capacity-building and accreditation activities.

PHF Conducts Fundamental Review of Washoe County Health District

In February 2014, PHF completed an organization-wide assessment of the structure, operations, oversight, governance, finances, and performance of the Washoe County Health District (Nevada). The four-month review identified key strengths and offered 24 recommendations for the agency to consider based on national standards. Read the complete report and learn more about this type of comprehensive health department review.

Preview a Preliminary Draft of Revisions to the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals

The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (Council on Linkages) is one month away from voting on adoption of the latest revisions to the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals (Core Competencies). How to Find the Right Team for Your Next Quality Improvement Project

The success of any quality improvement endeavor depends on the team working on it. It is not the number of people, rather -- how well they function and work together -- that makes a team successful. How do you select the right team members for your project? Start with the Team Member Selection Tool, which provides a common sense approach to constructing a team that is likely to succeed.

Maine CDC Uses Public Health Antibiotic Stewardship Driver Diagram to Address CDI

Antibiotics Pill B
In response to an increase in reported outbreaks of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) in long-term care and other healthcare facilities, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) began participating as a pilot site in PHF's Antibiotic Stewardship Program.

See how Maine CDC used the Public Health Antibiotic Stewardship Driver Diagram as a tool to help reduce transmission and acquisition of CDI through effective collaboration with healthcare partners.

Seven Public Health Training Plans Now Available on TRAIN

TRAIN
In last month's issue of PHF E-News, readers were invited to develop web-based training plans - groups of courses designed to address specific gaps in knowledge, skills, and competence - and post them to TRAIN, the nation's premier learning network for professionals who protect the public's health. In response to these requests and others from public health, public safety, and emergency preparedness organizations, you can now find seven public health training plans available on TRAIN from nationally-recognized providers of training.

Generate Ideas for Improvement with the SCAMPER Technique

The SCAMPER Technique is a process improvement tool that helps teams improve existing processes or create new ones. The tool helps a quality improvement team increase its creativity and think-outside-the box to generate many ideas for improvement. Learn more about this tool and see an example of its use from the Alabama Department of Health.
