Viral Hepatitis and Opioids |
|
“Interconnected, Intertwined, and Colliding” is the phrase Dr. Wolitski, director of the Office of HIV/AIDS and Infectious Disease Policy, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, used to describe the intersection of HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, and opioids last year. The drastic increase in opioid use and injection drug use has coincided with an increase in viral hepatitis in those under the age of 40. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , between 2004 and 2014, cases of hepatitis C increased by more than 200% and hepatitis B by more than 114% in those under 40 who inject drugs. For public and behavioral health, prevention is the first line of defense to combat the opioid epidemic. |

Training Spotlight:
One of the hallmarks of chronic hepatitis B is the dynamic nature of this infection and the variability of viral replication and immune activity in an individual’s lifetime. This case provides an overview of the three key phases of chronic hepatitis B infection.
These interactive lessons are part of the CDC funded H epatitis C Online , a free, educational, web-based service that functions as a comprehensive resource for diagnosing, monitoring, and managing the hepatitis C virus infection (HCV). |
