The Importance of Community Resiliency |

Resilience is the capacity to recover from difficulty. It can be a natural disaster, climate change, conflict, accidents, or a host of other challenges to communities, governments, and populations. A key component of resilience is being prepared, with appropriate infrastructure, policies, and workforce skills and competence. - The Community Health Resilience Initiative (CHRI) is a collaborative project, involving both public- and private-sector partners, to strengthen and enhance community health resilience across the nation.
- The National Disaster Resilience Competition has brought resilience building policy and practice to states and communities affected by disaster since 2011. Access stories from the winning jurisdictions, which are efforts to help communities and states rebuild better in the face of climate change and other shocks and stresses, and shift the way federal disaster recovery dollars are deployed.
- The Resilient America Roundtable and its programs help communities and the nation build resilience to extreme events, save lives, and reduce the physical and economic costs of disasters.

"Resilient Leadership: Building an Organizational Culture of Resilience" |
This course provides an overview of the nature of and practices which constitute "resilient leadership." Resilient leadership may be thought of as the attitudes and practices that may serve to create a "culture of resiliency" within a given organization. Such a culture promotes mutual support and success while viewing adversity as opportunity for growth. |

Top 5 Ways the TRAIN Learning Network Builds Public Health Workforce Capacity |
The TRAIN Learning Network continues to grow at an impressive rate - now serving the needs of over 1.5 million health workers – showing a sharp 50% increase in learners since late 2015. This expansion is fueled by impactful partnerships with 30 TRAIN affiliates, which are states, national organizations, or educational institutions that have purchased a customized TRAIN portal and collaborate to disseminate, track, and share trainings for professionals who work to improve the health of the population. These agencies, their staffs, and other national organizations have long recognized TRAIN as the foundational partner in building an effective and efficient workforce.
Recently, a report from the National Consortium for Public Health Workforce Development highlighted the need to build skills for a more strategic public health workforce due to “significant transitions” taking place governmental public health. As your organization addresses this challenge, consider the TRAIN Learning Network as your primary partner in developing strategic skills and building workforce capacity to improve health in your community. |

APHA 2017 Annual Meeting: Where to find PHF & TRAIN
The American Public Health Association (APHA) will be holding its APHA 2017 Annual Meeting & Expo in Atlanta, GA on November 4-8, 2017 at the Georgia World Congress Center. The event will offer professionals and practitioners the opportunity to network, educate, and share best practices. This year’s meeting theme is "Creating the Healthiest Nation: Climate Changes Health."
The Public Health Foundation (PHF) will be present throughout the conference, leading discussions and sharing resources and tools with public health and population health professionals in attendance. For more information on sessions and events check out the event page. |

The Western Region Public Health Training Center (Region 9) is reviewing and rating select online courses for public health professionals and creating an online course guide. Their staff have adapted the Quality Matters form to develop a guide that lists high-scoring, recommended courses.
The instrument assesses courses based on: Organization and Design, Instructional Design, Assessment and Evaluation Methods, Course Interaction, Use of Technology, Support and Resources Available, Course Delivery. Using the sorting feature, you can find vetted trainings by Public Health Core Competency Domain or Tier, and Training Run Time. You can also download the course guide as a PDF.
